Fights were much different before WWI (the early 1920s were a transitional era). Harry Greb would probably be DQed within 2 rounds if he was brought back to the present era. Sergio Martinez would feel like he was brought back to the Coliseum if he fought Greb in 1919.

In his 1938 book Wilde talks about having to get used to back-hand blows on his first tour of the States – about the way they scored in the US but not according to the British rules of boxing

In this day and age Villa would have been disqulified for knocking a man out after the bell had sounded. Taking nothing away from Villa he would have been disqualifed. I reda a report that Villa used a back hand blow with the glove in subsequent fights. There were 2 such backhands clearly visable just prior to the fina knockout of Jimmy. Viila looks fearsome and for Jimmy to continue when he was out for a minute in an earlier round is incredible.
